Tomorrow is July 12th, which means it is the day of Fasig-Tipton’s July sale. Being a pedigree fanatic, I love looking at sales catalogs and trying to pick out horses to keep an eye on in the future based on pedigree. I’ve weeded through these yearlings and have narrowed them down to a top 5 list of who I think could potentially be future stars.
Hip #232 c. Exchange Rate x Darby Lake (Meadowlake)
This colt’s mother is a half to the dam of G1-winner Hard Spun. While Darby Lake has not had nearly the same success as Turkish Tryst in the breeding shed, the fact that this colt is by a son of Danzig is promising, since Hard Spun was by Danzig.
Hip #5 c. Ghostzapper x Just Breezing (Golden Missile)
Hailing from the female family of European sensation Sea the Stars through his 3rd dam, Allegretta, this colt has a good chance of being a good one. Thus far, Ghostzapper has not impressed nearly as much in the breeding shed as he did on the track, but this colt’s dam is a half to a stakes-placed daughter of Awesome Again, so this female family has proven compatible with Awesome Again.
Hip #54 f. Corinthian x North East Gale (Tale of the Cat)
From the family of G2-winning miler North East Bound, this filly possesses what I believe should be a very potent cross – Pulpit with Tale of the Cat. Both stallions trace to a mare named Narrate, who won the 1983 Princess Doreen Stakes and Falls City Handicap(G3). All of Narrate’s offspring to race were winners, including her two fillies by Mr. Prospector – Preach and Yarn. Preach went on to give birth to Pulpit(by A.P. Indy), and Yarn to Tale of the Cat(by Storm Cat).
Pulpit and his sons have proven to cross well with Storm Cat and his sons, with notable G1-winning offspring including Careless Jewel(Tapit/Hennessey), Ice Box(Pulpit/Tabasco Cat), Mi Sueno(Pulpit/Hennessey), Sky Mesa(Pulpit/Storm Cat), and Tell a Kelly(Tapit/Tabasco Cat). While I can’t find any notable offspring bred on the direct cross of Pulpit and his songs and Tale of the Cat, I think the inbreeding to Narrate is a positive and should make this filly a hot commodity, provided she’s as physically impressive as she is well-bred.
Hip #145 f. English Channel x Treysta (Belong to Me)
Earlier in my top 5 list, I mentioned a colt from the female family of Hard Spun. Here’s a filly from the same family who looks even more promising. The choice to send Treysta, a ¾ sister to Hard Spun, to English Channel is a good one in my opinion, as Belong to Me’s best offspring have been turf runners like champion Forever Together. In addition, Smart Strike has crossed well with mares by Danzig and his songs in the past, with runners like champion Lookin at Lucky and G2-winner Papa Clem being by Smart Strike and out of Belong to Me mares, and the likes of G1-winner Soaring Free, G2-winner Smart Bid, and G3-winner Air Support being by Smart Strike and out of Danzig mares.
Hip #99 c. Tapit x Shadow of Storm (Storm Cat)
This colt is one of four in my 22-horse shortlist who trace tail-female to La Troienne, and I think he may be the one to watch most of those four. He traces to the legendary matriarch through the line of her granddaughter Busanda, first and foremost the dam of Buckpasser, but also of the Nasrullah mare Finance. Finance’s only daughter was La Mesa, who proved to be quite the producer. La Mesa’s most successful foal was 1984 Champion 2-Year-Old filly Outstandingly, but she also had a filly by Affirmed named La Affirmed, who is the 3rd dam of this yearling. La Affirmed was more productive in the breeding shed than her more talented sister, giving birth most notably to G3 Athenia Handicap winner Caress in 1991, G3 Gardenia Handicap winner Country Cat in 1992, Bernstein(by Storm Cat) in 1997, and G2 Belmont Breeders’ Cup Handicap winner Della Francesca in 1999. Caress went on to give birth to Sky Mesa, by Pulpit. In 1995, La Affirmed had a Mt Livermore filly named Layounne, the 2nd dam of this colt. The similar pedigree to Sky Mesa shouldn’t be ignored here – Sky Mesa’s dam, Caress, was by Storm Cat. Hip #99’s dam, Shadow of Storm, is also by Storm Cat. Sky Mesa was by Pulpit, and this colt is by Pulpit’s son Tapit.
